On October 25, a crowd of more than 70 gathered for NYU Shanghai’s inaugural PhD Open House. Hosted by the Office of Graduate and Advanced Education, the Open House showcased to prospective students NYU Shanghai’s opportunities for PhD research and study.
At the event, students were able to meet NYU Shanghai faculty, current PhD students, as well as current post-doctoral fellows, learn about the university’s vibrant research environment, and exchange views on the cutting-edge work being done on campus.
Opening the event, Eric Mao, Assistant Dean of Graduate and Advanced Education, welcomed the audience with an introduction to NYU Shanghai and an overview of its PhD programs. Mao commented, “There is simply no other place quite like NYU Shanghai. As a comprehensive research university, NYU Shanghai aspires to excellence at all levels, from undergraduate to graduate to professional education. Our PhD programs represent a vital part of our academic mission.”
Following Mao, faculty in all of NYU Shanghai’s PhD disciplines – Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Neural Science, and Physics – proceeded to introduce themselves and their research groups, highlights of their research, and their doctoral opportunities.
Assistant Professor of Biology Jungseog Kang, for example, who researches chromosome segregation in human cells, discussed his lab’s connections with University of Texas, Shanghai Tech, and East China Normal University. Assistant Professor of Chemistry William Glover featured the diversity of NYU Shanghai’s current Chemistry PhD students, half of whom are Chinese and half of whom are from other countries.
Dean of Computer Science and Engineering Keith Ross highlighted the recent additions of two new faculty, one specializing in cryptography and the other in smart transportation. Assistant Professor of Neural and Cognitive Sciences Jeffrey Erlich talked about the close relationship between NYU Shanghai’s Neural Science PhD program and the NYU-ECNU Institute of Brain and Cognitive Science. Lastly, NYU Shanghai’s Physics faculty discussed the breadth of their research, from topics in condensed matter to oxides to quantum technologies.
During the second half of the Open House, students and faculty retired to an adjacent room for breakout sessions and a dinner reception. Students were encouraged to circulate the room for one-on-one interactions with faculty and current PhDs at dedicated stations set up for each discipline and to exchange contacts.
Applications are currently open for Fall 2019 admission. NYU Shanghai’s PhD programs are offered jointly with other schools and departments of NYU, including the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Currently, 19 students are enrolled in NYU Shanghai’s PhD programs.
