On January 4, NYU Shanghai held events in both Shanghai and New York City for Early Decision I admitted students. At both events, students and family members got the chance to ask questions and gain insights into the NYU Shanghai- including its values, academic programs, and support network for students.
Associate Dean of Students Adam Ebnit said these events were designed to welcome students to the community and get them excited about beginning their NYU Shanghai journey. “Whether touring the campus in Shanghai, and learning about its academic offerings, connecting with admissions counselors and student ambassadors in New York City, or engaging with virtual resources, these opportunities offer essential insights, foster meaningful connections, and help set the stage for future success,” he said.
Shanghai: Exploring Campus and Local Culture
The Shanghai event welcomed seven admitted students and 19 family members from the United States, Mongolia, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan for a day of activities on and off campus.
The event began with a campus tour led by admissions ambassadors and other community members. Admitted students and their families visited classrooms, the library, and athletic facilities, as well as the residence halls.
Jim Otto, a parent of an incoming student from the United States, said he was impressed by what he saw. “The small class sizes, excellent facilities, and strong student support make us feel confident in our daughter’s decision,” he said. “We are very impressed with the campus and incredibly welcoming staff. Vice Chancellor Lehman said it best:, ‘be all in.’ If your student is inquisitive, adventurous, and open-minded, they have the opportunity to thrive here at NYU Shanghai.”
Later in the day, the participants headed off campus for dinner at a restaurant featuring authentic Shanghainese cuisine before visiting Yu Garden, a historic landmark in Shanghai. They admired the intricate traditional architecture and experienced the vibrant lantern display. These activities provided a glimpse into the local culture and allowed both students and families to build a meaningful connection with the city.
“The organized dinner and visit to Yu Gardens beautifully balanced our intellectually stimulating day, highlighting Shanghai's rich cultural tapestry," said Sara Moola, mother of an incoming student from the United States.
New York: Building Connections
For Early Decision admitted students in the United States, the event in New York provided an opportunity to connect with NYU Shanghai without leaving the country. A group of 12 admitted students and their families met up at Jiangnan restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown for a relaxed afternoon tea. Admitted students engaged with admissions counselors, current NYU Shanghai students, and future classmates and discussed academic programs, the transition to Shanghai, and opportunities to connect within the NYU Shanghai community.
NYU Shanghai will release Early Decision II acceptances on February 14 and Regular Decision acceptances on April 1.
