On the weekend of April 20, three NYU Shanghai sports teams traveled to Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou to compete in the third annual XJTLU Cup, a multi-sport tournament bringing together teams from several Sino-foreign universities including University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), Duke Kunshan University, and Wenzhou Kean University. In the tennis competition, NYU Shanghai fielded competitors in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The team defeated XJTLU and UNNC, 4-1 and 5-0 respectively, bringing the first place trophy back to Century Avenue. The NYU Shanghai badminton team had an exciting start, racking up two wins and one loss, eventually advancing to the semi-finals. They won a 3 -2 victory over Wenzhou Kean University and a 3 -1 victory over University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) before losing to XJTLU 2-3. In the semi-final, the badminton team went up against UNNC, narrowly missing a chance to play in the final. The combination of Lv Siyi ’21 and Ethan Huang ’21 in the men's doubles was particularly fierce, drawing the attention of the entire gymnasium. NYU Shanghai’s men’s basketball team breezed through the first two rounds, defeating Wenzhou Kean University, 29-20 and Duke Kunshan University, 34-17, before being stopped in the final by Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, 25-31. “I am very proud of our team. We invested more than 100% in the competition. We were not the most competitive, but in the end we made it to the finals,” said basketball team member Steve Cai ’22. “I will never forget how we performed in these three games and how we cheered each other on like family. This was the best weekend ever. ” Each team brought home a trophy after the day’s games.
